There's a quiet tension in product design: the same techniques that make an interface feel responsive also make it feel coercive. A notification badge is both helpful and demanding. A modal is both informative and interruptive. The craft is knowing when each is which.

Attention is a budget

Every user has a fixed amount of attention to give, and a fixed amount of trust to spend. Spend both carelessly and the product will work for a quarter. Spend them well and it can work for a decade.

  • Default to quiet. Add noise only when the value is clear.
  • Make the dismissible the easy option. The user is not your captive audience.
  • Earn every interruption. Most notifications can be a status, not an alert.

“A product that respects the user is a product the user comes back to. This is not altruism. It's strategy.”

We've watched products grow faster by doing less. Not by tricking users into a habit loop, but by being the place they don't have to think about. That's the work we want to keep doing.
